Pompei
Visited by over 2 million people each year, Pompeii is the best-preserved testament to Roman antiquity from the 1st century. The city was founded in the 6th century BC by the Aurunci and grew to the size we now know; it was inhabited by Greeks, Etruscans, and Italic Samnites.
Later becoming a Roman colony, the Amphitheater, the Odeon, and the Forum Baths were built. On August 24th, 79 AD, Pompeii was buried under ash, pumice, and lapilli, preserving it and making it possible to visit the houses where daily life took place, the Theater District, the city’s cultural center, the Baths, and the Necropolises.
